Mappin Simmentals is a 4th generation family farm, located by Byemoor, AB, Canada.
We have been using Simmental bulls since the 1970’s, and we purchased our first fullblood cows in 1993, and since then have been breeding traditional and Red & Black Simmentals. In 1996, we purchased a select group of Black Angus cows, which is the base for our black herd. We produce our own feed, and also grow cash crops.
The cows have developed through the years into moderate framed, easy fleshing cows, averaging 1400 lbs. We keep all
of our own replacements, adding a few select females from other progressive breeders. Our cowherd is our pride - we have worked diligently to get hard-working functional mother cows walking our pastures, and producing herd bulls for
ourselves and for our bull customers. We AI a select group of females each year, as we are always striving to produce outcross genetics, however our herd sires are truly the backbone of our progressive herd.
We measure performance differently, as we use extended grazing and other grazing alternatives to keep our cows on the range for longer. We understand our commercial bull buyers need cattle which can survive in hard grass country and our cowherd is living proof that Simmental can thrive in the harsh East-Central Alberta climate on a high roughage based diet.
We partnered up with Mud Butte Simmentals in 2006 to produce our first of many annual bull sales to come: the
Shortgrass Simmental Bull Sale, held on the first Saturday in March, in Veteran, AB at Dryland Cattle Trading Company. We also sell a select group of yearling heifers at this sale, which are sisters to the bulls in the sale.
Please feel free to drop us a note or give us a call at 403-579-2175 for more information or to be added to our sale
catalogue mailing list. We welcome all inquiries and visitors.
